Need some prompts to get a thread going?

1: Confession - The truth is, one of us has been working up the nerve for this conversation for a while now

"Wh-"

Marisa landed with marginally more dignity than she had when she'd crashed in front of Meiling. Her face was a picture of pure confusion, but sheer survival instinct let her keep her mouth shut and not make any noise.

Keeping very quiet, Marisa crawled over to a crack in the wall that let her sort of see the front gate and watched what happened next. Meiling had definitely helped her, but why? Marisa had never given her anything other than grief. She palmed a mushroom grenade, just in case this was some kind of trick, and settled down to watch.

Now it was a good thing that Meiling usually failed to stop Marisa - because she could use that as a defense. She wasn't really paying much attention, didn't usually even bother trying to stop Marisa on her way out, after all, so she'd just slipped by, Meiling explained. As angry as Sakuya was, she was at least in no mood to take it out on the gate guard, apparently, which left her hurried and somewhat lame excuse sufficient.

Lucky for Marisa, Sakuya didn't really know the gardens as well as Meiling did, so shoving her in a shed was actually enough.

She'd... saved Marisa's bacon. Seriously. After all the times Marisa had gotten her in trouble, and how much praise she'd get for stopping the witch, she found herself helping her out, and quietly ducked into the shed when the coast was clear. "Are you hurt?"

She blinked as daylight briefly streamed in, "Just a few bangs and scrapes. I'll be fine."

No doubt a youkai wouldn't even have those. Stupid frail human body. She sat up properly, but didn't feel like leaving the shed openly until she was more sure Sakuya was actually gone, so they could talk in here for now. Marisa stared at Meiling for several seconds, trying to decipher what she was feeling before just blurting out "So why'd you help me!?"

Even when she got 'em, they were hardly noticeable for very long. She crouched down, looking more closely at Marisa, feeling her face heat up slightly.

Wait, what?

Sure, she'd always gotten along with humans - she had lived alongside a great deal of human culture - and she didn't really mind Marisa, as funny and entertaining as she was, but... well. Even if it confused her a little, she was too old to try to lie to herself about her feelings.

"I didn't want to see you get really, seriously hurt. You might not believe it, but I'm actually kinda fond of you, Kirisame."

Marisa blinked. She had to play that conversation over in her head several times before she was confident she had heard her right. "What? Fond like...well, like fond? Even after all the trouble I get you in?"

Which she did. She justified it in various ways. It gave them something to do. She was gonna bring the books back. The eternal community of magicians. Knowledge was meant to be shared. But really deep down she knew she irritated the hell out of most of the mansion.

Deep down, it was kind of a dick move. A dick move she pulled constantly, and if she wasn't mortal they might not let her get away with it so easily. On the other hand, Meiling didn't want them to start thinking of Marisa as some stray animal, that they could be exasperated with, but was kind of cute, and not worth the trouble of really getting rid of.

Why Meiling didn't want that was. Well. Yeah. "I probably don't have much of a reason to like you all that much, huh?" she admitted, scratching the back of her head. "It's not just because you're cute though, I think."

"O-oh..."

You wanna talk about dick moves how about calling her cute out of nowhere. Marisa felt her own face heating up despite herself. "That's...you took me off guard, Meiling. Really? Me?"

Dick move more like best move. Meiling laughed at Marisa's reaction, a nervous laugh, from someone wondering if she'd said too much. "I haven't really had a... a thing for anyone in a long time." And Meiling's got a decent memory. "And as much energy as you have I doubt we're even a very good match, never mind that I still have to totally try to stop you from breaking in sometimes, but I do think you're cute. And interesting, and fun."

"Interestng and fun, huh?" Marisa took a minute to work through this. She'd imagined people admitting this kind of thing to her, sure. It had always come from handsome strangers by moonlight. Or at a fancy party with coy looks. Or maybe while huddling for warmth during a storm.

The point was Marisa didn't only read spellbooks. She had a small collection of cheap romance novels, some of them from the outside world (and boy were THOSE hard to follow, but she'd done her best), hidden under her bed. None of them involved a confession in a dingy gardening shed at two in the afternoon on a sunny day.

Then again, you could also say that none of them came from a girl to another girl in those books. Meiling wasn't a mysterious stranger, but she was tall and, in her own way, handsome. And really, "interesting and fun" was a better compliment than any of the pretty but timid girls from her books.

"...I think I'm okay with that. Thank you."

Meiling knew more about the outside world and she'd be confused by those books, as long as it'd been. Marisa would be pretty baffled to be sure.

More of those books probably involved sort-of-enemies confessing to each other than any of those other scenarios, and more of them were probably a human with a... not that. So maybe this wasn't the most impossible seeming confession. Frankly, Meiling wasn't going to be too bothered if Marisa turned her down, or at least she told herself that, and she was expecting it. There wasn't much special about her, was there?

So that answer wasn't the most direct, but Meiling couldn't help smiling. "Okay with me being interested, or okay with actually trying a relationship?" she asked to clarify, still fairly casual despite her brightening blush.

"Gosh I dunno. Both, maybe."

Marisa grinned like an idiot while blushing furiously. Was this actually happening? "We could try it, at least?"

That was actually really easy? Who would've guessed. Meiling lowered from a crouch to sitting on the floor of the shed, leaning against the side. "I should warn you that I can be kind of sappy... Marisa."

"Sappy how? I dunno what this kind of thing is supposed to look. I only got one data point here unless you count old romance novels."

Meiling was hundreds of years old. She HAD to have some better idea for how this was supposed to go. Marisa sure didn't.

Ehhh kind of a better idea? "Ah, the problem is my lack of free time, although I think Sakuya would prefer you loitering around the gate to other things you could be doing." She blushed, leaning her head back. "I haven't written poetry in decades, but I might have to give it another shot. That kind of sappy."

"You write poetry?" Despite everything, Marisa laughed. It was hard to imagine spacey, sleepy Meiling writing poetry.

She waved at Meiling to wait. "No, no I'm sorry. I shouldn't laugh. It's just, y'know. Not what I expected."

"China has a robust history of romantic poetry," she replied, laughing a bit as well, "although I've never written it in Japanese, so it might be an adventure."

Meiling shrugged. "I really want to get to know you, and... for you to get to know me. That's what we'll have to do, right?"

"I guess so. I don't really know you very well, despite you being around here for like four years now."

"We do kinda live at a different pace, no? But we have plenty of time for it."

Marisa looked down and fidgeted before speaking again. "Should I kiss you, now? That seems like something I should do."

Meiling scooted closer. "I can kiss you instead."

Marisa resisted the urge to scoot back, which would have been her normal response. "Is there a difference?"

"A difference like this, maybe," Meiling said while leaning in, lifting a hand to lightly touch Marisa's chin, tilting her head gently while going in for a kiss.
