[The best time for soul searching is at the tail end of a massive party when everyone is slightly drunk. Rider, a goblet of wine in one hand, addresses you seriously.]

This is a fine revel, but that alone does not let me know your measure as a man/woman/individual [select appropriate].

Tell me, what would you say is the most important thing in life? What ideal do you value above all others?

This need not come to violence, my friend. You need only surrender and join my cause. Surely a peaceful resolution would be best?

How can anything be as great as what lives in your heart? To find your life's goal and only have it be a whole lot of water...No, I spoke hastily. This is not Oceanus. This is just an ocean.

Oceanus was more than just the eastern most ocean of Eurasia. Oceanus was an idea! We tried all the harder to reach it because we knew we never would! Oceanus is reaching for that which you cannot reach, because just the reaching is worthwhile.

[He yelped, hands flying up to cover his forehead as he toppled backwards into the sand. Looking up at Rider with wide eyes from his decidedly undignified position, he tried to process exactly what the Macedonian was saying.]

So you're saying that you were after something that you knew you would never reach!? That's-- that's--

[Really, really stupid!]

I was chasing after it because I knew I would never reach it.

[He squatted down by Waver so that he didn't tower over him by QUITE so much.]

Don't worry, boy. It was a good gesture.

[Waver glanced away, staring at his feet digging into the sand instead of Rider's intense gaze.]

You idiot. You had to have hoped that you would make it. Otherwise, you wouldn't have travelled over half a continent on foot to find it.

Hm, listen.

I wanted to reach Oceanus. We all did. But in my heart of hearts, what I was really after was to just keep seeing what was over the horizon. To keep going until the ends of the Earth. If we actually reached Oceanus, it would all be over. There'd be no more world left to conquer.

I don't know what I would have done next.

Don't worry, this still seems an fine way to spend an afternoon. I have always enjoyed swimming.
