It's really not that complicated. If you're not sure, just think about how much money the people present have. The more money they have the more layers of clothes you will probably be expected to wear.

layers aren't bad, I suppose. but I think my favorite clothes are the swishy ones, like my shawl. they remind me of my currents, they way they drape and ripple. it's nice.

Unless you're at Lord Fauntleroy's estate. The man is a famous nudist, and you need not resort to any layers at all, should you so desire.

On the off chance that we visit Lord Fauntleroy, yes you can wear a shawl. The nudity is optional, is my understanding.
